CBD Hemp Doctor FAQs

These questions were asked by physicians at a primary medicine conference in May 2019.
Please see our CBD Hemp Primer for basic information on CBD, THC, hemp, marijuana, and the endocannabinoid system.
.

What is the most common use of CBD?

It supports the endocannabinoid system to reduce pain with no known side effects.

What are the next most common uses of CBD?

In the same way, it reduces anxiety, stress, inflammation, and sleeplessness with no known side effects.

Can CBD be used topically?

There are no laws against using phytocannabinoids topically (i.e.: plant oils on your skin).  However FDA regulations do not allow any disease claims to be made to promote natural products applied to the skin.  If this claim were to be made, then the FDA would consider the material a drug and require multi-million dollar studies to demonstrate safety and that it works for the disease claim.

With that said, it is hypothesized that our nano-enhanced CBD will absorb through the skin more effectively than standard CBD.

Why is nano-enhanced better?

First, nano enhancement involves encapsulating CBD molecules in liposomes (a thin layer of fat).  These liposomes (phospholipids) are compatible with cellular membranes and thus enhance the absorption of CBD and other phytonutrients through the phospholipid bilayer of cells, including cells in the skin, cells in the mouth, cells in the gastrointestinal tract, and cells in the vascular system, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

One can use a lower dose when it is nano-enhanced because mg for mg, nano-enhanced will be more effective.

What is the recommended dosing?

We suggest starting with a low dose and titrating up as needed:
Day 1: Start with 2 drops twice per day for the first 3 days
Day 4: Up to 3 drops twice per day – as needed
Day 7: Up to 4 drops twice per day – as needed
Day 10: Up to 5 drops twice per day – as needed

Is a higher dose more effective?

Remember that CBD acts to modulate the endocannibinoid system.  You are looking for balance, not necessarily saturation of the system.  Anecdotal evidence suggests that a moderate dose will be more effective than either a low or high dose.  As all patients are different and in a different state of homeostasis or imbalance, dosing varies.  That is why we suggest starting with a very low dose and titrating up.

How long will a bottle last?

Following dosing listed on the label, a bottle will last 2 months.  Following the dosing above, a bottle will last much longer.

How expensive is CBD?

With your web dispensary doctor discount, your patient cost is $72 per bottle which is $36 per month at the recommended dose.  Dietary supplements are tax deductible, when you recommend it for a specific medical condition, potentially saving your patients even more.  You may review the related IRS regulations here.

What criteria should we consider when deciding on a CBD product?

Major criteria include: 1. Organic; 2. Nano-enhanced for an effective lower and less costly dose; 3. Full spectrum to obtain “the entourage effect;” 4. Supercritical CO2 extraction rather than using solvents (which leave residues) for extraction; 5. clean labeling (i.e.: the lack of unfamiliar fillers, stabilizers, emulsifiers, and other chemical additives; 6. 3rd party lab testing for validation of active ingredients and lack of contaminants; 7. Potential tax deductibility if recommended by a qualified medical practitioner for a particular medical condition; 8. No objectionable hemp smell or flavor; 9. Brand reputation; 10. Licensing and knowledge of your medical practitioner, the “bud tender,” or store clerk, who is recommending a particular brand and dose for your medical condition.

What is The Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect refers to how various cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other natural constituents work together synergistically to magnify their potential therapeutic properties. Introduced in 1998 in a study by Israeli researchers Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam, the entourage effect theory maintains that isolated or synthetic cannabinoids aren’t as effective at eliciting curative effects as when all of the natural constituents work together harmoniously. Supporting the entourage theory, a full spectrum formulation is recommended.

Will CBD oil trigger a positive response from drug testing?

It may, depending on the dose taken, the length of time from dosing to administration of the test, and the sensitivity and selectivity of the test.  One should seek guidance from the employer or testing company if there is any risk of repercussions from a positive test.

Can you give CBD to all patients, including children and the elderly?

All humans have an endocannabinoid system and will likely respond to CBD.  The concern with children and the elderly is that they could be more sensitive to CBD and little scientific testing has been done to establish safety for various populations or dosing for those people. For liability reasons, we say CBD Hemp tincture is for adults over the age of 18.

Is it OK to travel with CBD?

To answer this we will provide a bit of botanical information.  Hemp and Marijuana are two different forms of Cannabis.  By definition, hemp contains mostly CBD and less than 0.3% THC by weight.  Marijuana contains CBD and THC, but more than 0.3% THC by weight.  The two plants often look identical and only laboratory testing will determine which is which.

While the 2019 Farm Bill makes it legal to grow, ship, and travel with hemp and CBD from hemp in the U.S., it is possible that an enforcement officer will not be up to date on new regulations nor be able to tell the difference between CBD from hemp and CBD from marijuana.

With the current popularity and pervasive availability of CBD from hemp, the risk of being stopped is minimal for traveling with a small amount of CBD from hemp when it is carried in a clearly marked container.

Is there THC in CBD from hemp?

Yes, by law, there must be no more than 0.3% THC in CBD oil.  Our last batch tested at 0.05% THC.

We believe it is beneficial to have a small amount of THC in hemp oil, because it is several of the 500 molecules in hemp oil that enhance the availability and benefit of CBD.  Please see the discussion on “the entourage effect,” essentially a synergistic benefit of the variety of molecules, in our CBD, THC, Hemp Primer.

Can a person get high from THC in CBD oil?

No.

How long until a person feels the benefit from taking CBD Hemp Tincture?

At the 2019 primary care medical conference, a number of doctors who sampled our product reported feeling a benefit in 20-30 minutes.  Some came back the next day and reported still feeling the benefits.  Others did not recognize any benefits the first time they sampled it.  Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different and in a different state of balance or imbalance.  So responses vary.

How long should a person take CBD Hemp Tincture?

As long as it provides the desired benefit.

Why are there so few published studies?

While CBD from hemp was illegal at the federal level, the government was not sponsoring and educational institutions were not conducting studies.  Neither was industry investing in studies.  That is changing and I expect more studies to be conducted now.

Can CBD be added to food or beverages?

Yes, but we do NOT recommend taking our CBD Hemp tincture with food.  Our nano-enhanced tincture will work better when placed under the tongue, held for 30 seconds, then swallowed.  Mixing it in food or drink will significantly dilute the benefits.

However it is possible to use high doses of non-nano-enhanced CBD if you want to add it to food or drink.  It will likely be much more expensive per dose.

Is it addictive?

No.

Why does most hemp oil have an unpleasant musty smell and taste?

That’s its natural smell and taste.  Our CBD Hemp tincture is flavored with your choice of natural Cinnamon or Peppermint.  Not a single person who tried it has recognized the underlying hemp smell or taste.  Everyone who commented was surprised how pleasant the flavor, taste and mouth feel are.

Where is CBD grown?

Our CBD comes from hemp grown in Kentucky to organic standards.

I’ve heard of Charlotte’s Web brand CBD.  What’s the difference?

The historical tribute to Charlotte Figi has been removed from the Charlotte’s Web site.  So, looking to Wikipedia, they report that the Stanley brother founders of Charlotte’s Web were searching for a solution for a child, Charlotte Figi’s epileptic seizures.  They provided her high dose CBD, reported to contain .5% THC from marijuana and obtained excellent anecdotal results which were reported on CNN.  They began harvesting CBD from hemp and marketed it based on the positive press with CBD from marijuana.  Charlotte’s Web is marketed as an extremely high dose and super premium priced hemp CBD product based on this anecdotal report and the great press the founders received using marijuana.  It’s a great story, but is it about hemp or marketing?

Other notable differences are that Charlotte’s Web uses a solvent based extraction process versus CO2 extraction used in the Rejuvenation Science product.  In its 2018 IPO, Charlotte’s Web raised $87 million, Rejuvenation Science does not have to price our product to generate a ROI on that grand sum.
