Krill Oil Reduces Arthritis

Biom3ga™ Krill Oil significantly reduces arthritis in an experimental animal model. Biom3ga™ Krill Oil contains a major part of the omega-3 fatty acids in the form of phospholipids, whereas fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids exclusively in the form of triglycerides. In the same study, fish oil also showed positive effects, but was less potent than krill oil. This is demonstrated in a preclinical study performed for the biotechnological company Aker BioMarine.

The study was performed by researchers at MD Biosciences, Neurology Discovery Services, Ness Ziona, Israel. Arthritis was induced in mice by exposure of collagen, which resulted in development of severe arthritic symptoms. The animals were treated with a control diet without omega-3 or with krill oil and fish oil diets containing similar doses of omega-3 fatty acids. At the end of the treatment period, the arthritis score was reduced by 26% after fish oil treatment and by 47% after krill oil treatment.

The results from this study support previous findings that omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial against the development of arthritis. Furthermore, the results are in line with previous research on krill oil which has demonstrated that omega-3 fatty acids in the form of phospholipids can be more effective than omega-3 fatty acids from triglycerides.
